Taupō District Mayor elect John Funnell said he wasn’t surprised at the result of today’s local body poll.
Provisional results* have him on 4,575 votes, ahead of Zane Cozens (3,461), David Trewavas (2400) and Kevin Taylor (2,270).
“I've got a pretty good team behind me, in fact very effective at marketing and that's made it easy for me to get the message out there and for the public to interact with me.”
At his campaign party on Saturday afternoon he admitted he wasn’t initially aware of the Māori Ward referendum result which had garnered 7,486 votes to remove, against 4,742 to keep.
