Craters of the Moon Trust launches community grants programme

The Craters of the Moon Trust is offering grant funding to organisations with ideas that will make a positive difference in the Taupō District.

The Craters of the Moon attraction through its governing trust is looking to support projects that benefit local communities, promote education and physical wellbeing, protect the environment, celebrate arts and culture, and enhance visitor experiences.

The Craters of the Moon Trust is inviting applications for its new Community Grants Programme, offering funding to organisations, community groups and individuals with ideas that will make a positive difference in the Taupō District.

The programme will support projects that benefit local communities, promote education and physical wellbeing, protect the environment, celebrate arts and culture, and enhance visitor experiences.

Trust Chair Peter Cush says the programme reflects the trust’s commitment to support the community and help worthwhile projects get off the ground.

“We know there are individuals, groups and organisations doing valuable work in our area, often with limited resources. We want to help local people turn good ideas into projects that make a real difference.

“Sometimes a relatively modest grant can unlock an opportunity that might otherwise not happen. We’re looking forward to hearing what people have planned and the benefits their projects could bring to the community.”

Trust manager Pip Dixon says the programme is an opportunity to help local ideas become reality.

“Working in the community, you meet people with great ideas who just need a little support to take the next step.

“Whether it’s an environmental project, an education or training opportunity, or an initiative that strengthens community connections, we want to hear about projects that can deliver lasting benefits for the district.”

Who can apply?

The Trust welcomes applications from charities, schools, environmental organisations, sports and recreation groups, arts and cultural organisations, community groups and individuals.

Projects should align with one or more of the Trust’s charitable purposes, which include supporting education and wellbeing, protecting flora and fauna, fostering arts and culture, improving community amenities, and providing information and enhancing experiences for visitors to Craters of the Moon and the wider Wairakei Tourist Park.

Applicants are encouraged to review the programme’s eligibility requirements and assessment criteria before applying.

Applications are open until 5pm on January 15, 2027. Funding decisions are expected to be announced in March 2027.
