Is the worst of winter here yet? Perhaps not quite.
While parts of the North Island are expected to cop heavy rainfall and strong winds from a low-pressure system wrapping around the North Island over the next couple of days, Taupō is expected to be spared.
The MetService is forecasting the strongest winds to be further to the south or east of the district and while a band of rain may affect the Waikato and Bay of Plenty to begin Friday (June 26) it is likely to ease as the day wears on.
Heavy rain is only likely to get as close as the Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay and the East Coast and by lunchtime Taupō should be experiencing sunshine.
The service is also predicting fine weather for the rest of the weekend in the district with the wet and windy weather more likely to affect areas to the south and east.
Cooler weather is expected in the next few days though with some forecasts suggesting an average temperature of 10.9 degrees Centigrade.
Statistics up until now show the district has been very close to its historical average, at 12.2 deg C.
In general, the average temperature in the district at the beginning of June is 12.7 deg C but as the month progresses, temperatures tend to fall, reaching an average of 11.7 deg C by the end of the month.
June is a month in which the district can experience heavy rainfall, with it commonly receiving some rain over 20 days for the month and an average total precipitation 98.8 mm.
