King Country Trust has announced plans to use this year's Tūrangi consumer distribution to help freehold the Tūrangi Community Health Centre, rather than providing the usual power account credits to local consumers.
The proposal would direct funds to help the Southern Lake Taupō Health Trust clear an existing debt of $425,000, strengthening the long-term sustainability of the health facility that serves the Tūrangi community.
The Tūrangi Community Health Centre provides essential services to local residents including primary healthcare, specialist consultations, community health initiatives, and wellbeing support. Freeing the centre from debt would allow for future development plans including additional consulting rooms, improvements to the existing structure, and potential investment in solar energy.
The King Country Trust receives income from its 25% shareholding in King Country Energy Ltd and other investments, including funds realised from previously selling its shares in The Lines Company. The trust distributed approximately $1 million to consumer beneficiaries in 2024, resulting in an average credit of around $100 to each power account. If this proposal is confirmed, Tūrangi consumers would forgo similar credits this year.
The trust is seeking feedback specifically from the Tūrangi community before making a final decision. A public meeting will be held this Wednesday, April 30, at 3pm at the Tūrangi Visitor Centre, 1 Ngawaka Place.
