South Waikato – Work Underway

SH1 Tokoroa to Ātiamuri

Work continues on Stage 1 between the SH1/SH32 intersection at Tokoroa and the SH1 Kinleith intersection, with overnight closures in place.
Detour: SH32 → Old Taupō Road → Kinleith Road (and vice versa).
Detour adds approx. 5km and 5 minutes to travel time.

Recent bad weather has delayed progress, so crews are also working tonight, Friday 22 November.

Stage 2 is now scheduled to begin Thursday 27 November, weather permitting.
During Stage 2, SH1 between the SH1/SH32 and SH1/SH30 intersections will be closed overnight, 7pm–6am, Sunday to Thursday.
Detour: SH32 → SH30 → SH1 at Ātiamuri (and vice versa).
Detour adds approx. 33.6km and 27 minutes to travel time.


SH5 East of Tīrau

Road widening continues between SH28 Whites Road and Waimakariri Road to prepare for the installation of wide centrelines.
Traffic is managed with speed restrictions and some stop/go.
Work continues until Monday 15 December.


SH5 / SH28 Harwoods Road

Construction is underway on a new roundabout at this intersection east of Tīrau.
Traffic is managed with speed restrictions.

Access in and out of SH28 at the worksite is closed until Wednesday 17 December.
Detour: SH27 → SH29.

From Wednesday 26 November, for approximately 10 days, 24/7 stop/go will be in place on a short section of SH5 inside the worksite.

The new roundabout is expected to be operational in March 2026.


SH1 / SH5 Taupō

Construction of a Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre at the SH1/SH5 roundabout is progressing well.

  • In-road weigh-in-motion scales have been installed.
  • Camera and electronic signboard installation is underway.
  • Lane work is largely complete, with only occasional day closures remaining.
  • Shoulder work continues.

SH1 Waitahanui

Overnight stop/go is in place for asphalting between 7pm and 6am.
Temporary speed limits apply during the day.
Please expect delays while works are underway.
