Tongariro Rescue Highlights Need for New Helicopter Winch as Fundraising Passes $400,000

A serious motor vehicle accident in Tongariro National Park on Sunday has highlighted the crucial role of the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter service, as community fundraising for a new rescue winch passes the $400,000 mark.

A female patient in a life-threatening condition was airlifted to Waikato Hospital on Sunday afternoon following a motor vehicle accident in Tongariro National Park. The Greenlea Rescue Helicopter crew spent approximately 30 minutes stabilising the patient at the scene before transport.

The rescue operation comes as the community fundraising campaign for a vital piece of equipment - a rescue winch for the new H145 helicopter - passes a significant milestone of $400,000 raised. However, $214,892 is still needed to reach the target.

"The Central Plateau and Lakes regions simply cannot go without this vital rescue winch," says the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter crew. The new H145 rescue helicopter is scheduled to join the fleet in April, and the fundraising campaign aims to ensure it's fully equipped for the challenging terrain of the region.

The community campaign has received widespread support, with a matching donation programme in place to help reach the target. Local residents and businesses can have their donations doubled through the rescue organisation's dedicated fundraising platform.
