Taupō's morning traffic is likely to get busier from today as the golden weather comes to an end for students and the annual migration back to school begins for 2025.

It will be a staggered start overall with a number of primary schools taking it gently before launching into a full day. Hilltop will start with a Whanau Hui and Orientation day on Friday before school proper on Monday.

Taupō Primary begins with an annual Meet the Teacher and Family Fun Day on Monday before school resumes on Tuesday, with Wairakei and Mountview Primary Schools similarly opening with whanau interviews or a fun day before a full-on Tuesday start.

Meanwhile, for the big kids, Tauhara College welcomes its new intake of Year 9s today (Thursday), while Taupō-nui-a-Tia has its Year 9 powhiri on Monday then is full noise from Tuesday. Taupō Intermediate students also begin on Monday.

Broadlands School Principal Graeme Taylor says they're particularly excited about welcoming their youngest students. "We look forward to welcoming our new students back next week full of excitement, especially our 5-year-olds," Taylor says. "They have so much energy and they are just ready to learn."

Parents should check with their child's school for full details and motorists should keep an eye out for additional activity around schools in the coming week.

Taylor notes that with Waitangi Day next week, some families might extend their weekend, though the school will be open as usual on the Friday.
