The updating of Taupō's sister city relationship with Suzhou in China went off without a hitch on Monday, though something of a curve ball was thrown when the head of the delegation suggested an exchange of museum exhibitions between the two cities should be considered in future. The idea was acknowledged by strategic relationships manager David Rameka in his reply to the suggestion.
At the formal welcome for the Suzhou representatives, Taupō's Mayor David Trewavas, Deputy Mayor Kevin Taylor, Councillor Anna Park, and Chief Executive Julie Gardyne were ably backed by council staff in full voice singing two supportive waiata.
During the visit, the Suzhou delegation signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the bonds between the two communities further by fostering mutual growth and collaboration in various sectors.
Additionally, an agreement was exchanged between Waipahihi School and Suzhou Experimental School, marking a new chapter in educational cooperation and cultural exchange. In a release, the council said the event highlighted its commitment to building lasting and meaningful relationships with international partners.
