A free 45-minute concert in the Tongariro South Domain on Saturday, April 5 is a case of the band taking their music to the people rather than the audience going to a venue.
The Taupō Concert Band is hoping its late summer playout on April 5 at 10.30am will allow those shopping to drop by and for attendees at the Home and Garden Show to take a morning tea pass out to listen to some live music.
The idea was partially in response to the cancellation of the planned inaugural four band bandstravanganza to raise money for breast cancer research, said band conductor Matt West.
This had been scheduled for late March featuring Bras and Brass, a New Zealand all-women brass band drawing on players and percussionists from around the country.
But the band had been thinking of performing in one of the council spaces around town for a while, so thought why not stage a free concert with the material we’d prepared instead, said West.
While he hoped the idea of featuring the national Bras and Brass Band in Taupō one day would still happen, he thought the idea of a late summer outdoor concert by the Taupō Concert Band might become an annual event anyway.
Members of the Taupō Youth Windband will also join in for a couple of pieces.
“We appreciate the local support at the likes of our midday concert at St Andrews every year but sometimes it’s good to take the music to the people and attract a new audience, or maybe even inspire some kids to take up an instrument,” West said.
