The MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Taupō and other central North Island areas, warning of potential flash flooding and hazardous driving conditions between 2pm and 8pm today.

Forecasters predict scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms could produce localised downpours of 25 to 40 millimetres per hour. These slow-moving weather systems are expected to affect areas from southern Waikato and Bay of Plenty, across to Taupō, Taumarunui, northern Taihape and the far east of Taranaki.

The MetService warns that rainfall of this intensity could cause surface and flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys. There is also a risk of slips in affected areas.

Motorists are being urged to exercise caution as driving conditions may become hazardous due to surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain. The MetService notes that localised downpours could occur even in areas not experiencing thunderstorms.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings throughout the afternoon and evening.
