Motorists travelling near Taupō's major highway intersection will need to stay alert for changing road conditions in the months ahead as construction progresses on the new Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has announced contractors will be installing in-road weigh-in-motion scales and camera technology on five key approaches to the facility from late January through May.
The affected roads include State Highway 1 both north and south of the roundabout, State Highway 5 east of the roundabout, Napier Road to the west, and Crown Road.
"To minimise disruption, temporary lanes will be constructed on road shoulders, allowing traffic to move around the work areas," says NZTA. "While speed restrictions will be in place, we expect only minor delays for motorists."
The Taupō facility, scheduled to open in early 2026, is one of twelve being built nationwide as part of NZTA's Commercial Vehicle Safety Programme. Once operational, it will use advanced technology to screen heavy vehicles, allowing police to check compliance with weight limits, road user charges, and safety requirements.
The centre will also feature a stock truck effluent disposal facility, supporting cleaner highways in the central North Island freight corridor.
