Road Safety Week from May 12-18 will feature plenty of reminders about the repercussions serious accidents can have on a community, as well as celebrating the work of emergency services staff.
A lakefront display on the fence near Te Ātea will feature five yellow ribbons representing the lives lost on Taupō district roads in 2024, says Taupō District Council road safety coordinator Sarah Wraight, while customer support and library staff in Taupō, Tūrangi and Mangakino will be wearing brake road safety t-shirts for the week.
“We will also have small displays that week featuring five yellow ribbons. There will also be yellow brake ballons on display.”
Local emergency stories will be circulated by the council on social media and the #lovetaupo sign will be yellow lit like other icons throughout New Zealand including the Sky Tower and Auckland Harbour Bridge.
There is also a colouring-in competition celebrating the work emergency services staff do and on the afternoon of Friday May 16 the road safety team will be part of a ‘better together’ campaign at the Z-Tauhara service station with police and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi staff.
“We’ll be there to chat to people, hand out some giveaways and create awareness about driving safely as people perhaps head away for the weekend,” said Wraight.
