🚧 Work Starting Soon

SH1 East Taupō Arterial

  • Start date: Sunday 15 February
  • Duration: 1 week
  • Hours: 6am – 7pm daily
  • Traffic management: Stop/go during work hours; temporary speed limits outside work hours
  • What’s next: A further week of overnight asphalting under stop/go traffic management will take place at a later date (to be confirmed).

SH1 Taupō to Tūrangi

  • SH1 / Kiko Road intersection:
    • Overnight stop/go from mid–late March to early April
  • SH1 at Motuoapa:
    • Overnight stop/go from late March to early April

Taupō Event – ANZCO Foods Ironman New Zealand

  • Date: Saturday 7 March
  • SH5 closure: 6am – 6pm between Wairakei and Reporoa (cycle stage of the event)
  • Alternative route (Taupō ↔ Rotorua):
    • SH1 → SH30 via Ātiamuri and Horohoro
  • Additional closures:
    • Broadlands Road
    • Broadlands Road off-ramp onto East Taupō Arterial Road
    • Closed 6am – 7pm
  • Cyclist safety:
    • Cyclists will be training on the roads prior to the event.
    • Please drive with caution, reduce speed when passing cyclists, and allow at least 1.5 metres when overtaking.

🚧 Work Underway

SH32 Tihoi Area

  • Until: Late April
  • Work: Overhead powerline maintenance by Ventia
  • Location: Between Tihoi Mill Road and Whakamaru Road
  • Impacts: Short road closures may occur to allow cables to be hauled across the road.

SH32 Whakamaru Road

  • Duration: 5 weeks (started Wednesday 28 January)
  • Hours: 6.30am – 6.30pm, Monday to Friday
  • Traffic management: 2-way stop/go

SH1 Desert Road

  • Northern sites (Rangipō – Poutu & Puketarata Hill):
    • Final asphalt layer completed at night under stop/go
    • Completion: Sunday 15 February
  • Southern sites (Mangamate, Oturere & Mangatoetoe-nui – “Three Sisters”):
    • Dates: Sunday 15 February – Monday 9 March
    • Hours: Sunday–Thursday nights, 7pm – 6am
    • Traffic management: Full overnight road closures
    • Detour:
      • SH41 Tūrangi → SH47 → SH4 → SH49 to Waiouru (and vice versa)
      • Detour map available
  • Weather delays:
    • Shifts may be rescheduled to the next suitable fine night
    • In some cases, Friday night work may be used to make up lost time

SH1 Ātiamuri to Wairākei

  • Status: Nearly complete
  • Remaining work: Chipsealing near Tutukau Road
  • Date: Wednesday 11 February
  • Hours: 7pm – 6am
  • Traffic management: Stop/go overnight
  • Outside work hours:
    • Road open with temporary speed restrictions
  • Note: Additional road work will also be undertaken in this area.

SH1 Motuoapa

  • Work: Road rebuild over a 650m section
  • Until: Thursday 5 March
  • Work hours: 6am – 7pm
  • Traffic management:
    • Stop/go with one lane open at all times
    • 24/7 traffic management and reduced speed limits
  • Additional impacts:
    • Pedestrian restrictions and limited parking within the work area
  • Waitangi weekend:
    • No active work, but stop/go and speed restrictions remain in place
  • Please plan ahead for delays

SH49 Volcanic Loop Highway

  • Location: Near Tangiwai
  • Hours: 6.30am – 6.30pm daily
  • Traffic management: Stop/go with temporary reduced speed limits
  • Duration: Ongoing for 4 weeks
