Taupō's air connectivity received a boost today with the launch of Originair's new direct service to Wellington, marking a significant development for the district's transport infrastructure.
The inaugural flight touched down at Taupō Airport to a ceremonial welcome, accompanied by local band Blended providing entertainment for the occasion. Mayor David Trewavas and local officials greeted passengers and crew, with representatives from local tourism operators, economic agencies, and destination marketing teams all present to mark the milestone.
The service will operate three times weekly, running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, using an 18-seat British Aerospace Jetstream aircraft.
Originair CFO Warren Kitchin acknowledged the challenging economic climate for regional aviation but expressed confidence in the route's potential. "We're pleased to re-establish this important link with the capital," Kitchin said. "We know that for tourism, for business travellers, for special events here in Taupō, it's really important that the air services connect well for domestic and for international."
Kitchin pointed to post-COVID challenges facing regional airlines, noting that operational costs have increased significantly. However, he emphasised that focused operations with strong community support can remain productive. "Over time, we're hoping that will grow, and that will certainly come from support of the service," he said.
Mayor Trewavas highlighted the airline's credibility and the importance of community support for the service's success. "We need to use it to make the thing viable," he said, acknowledging the presence of local aviation pioneers who understand the challenges of making regional routes sustainable. He particularly emphasised the potential benefits for government departments and local businesses.
The route's development has been a collaborative effort, with Kitchin acknowledging the support from Taupō District Council, Taupō Airport Authority, and numerous local businesses that provided the "strength and confidence to develop this new service."
While the airline has taken what Kitchin describes as a "conservative approach" to the schedule, there's potential for increased frequency based on demand and community support. The service aims to enhance both business connectivity and tourism opportunities, particularly focusing on connecting Taupō with domestic and international travellers coming through Wellington.
Local economic development agencies and destination marketing teams have pledged their support to promote the service, recognising its importance for regional connectivity and growth.
