The Taupō Events Centre's multi-purpose stadium is receiving a significant upgrade, including floor levelling and maintenance work, ahead of hosting major sporting events later this year.

The 20 or so Taupō sports groups who regularly use the Taupō Events Centre will have to wait until April to get back into the stadium when a major refurbishment should be complete.

The centre opened more than three decades ago, and its multi-purpose stadium is now getting an upgrade involving floor sanding and revarnishing, which happen every two years, as well as some levelling.

Council district venues manager Bryce Green says that, with almost 2000 square metres of floor space available, the work will benefit all sorts of events and functions.

About 11 major events take place in the stadium every year, he says.

As well as the stadium floor, the bleachers and centre court basketball hoops are getting some TLC.

The stadium will host a major world title fight later this year, with world boxing champion Lani Daniels taking on Nailini Helu. Professional basketball games are also scheduled, as well as volleyball, indoor bowls, roller derby and the annual Tūwharetoa Taiopenga Kapa Haka Festival.

The temporary closure does not affect the AC Baths pools, Fitness Studio or function room.
