Taupō's reputation as a premier disc golf destination has been cemented after hosting its most prestigious tournament yet, with the Taupō Classic drawing an unprecedented field of international talent.
The tournament, part of the Tour Down Under series, saw approximately 30 international professionals compete among a field of 48 pros, including 20 players ranked in the world's top 100.
American Aidan Scott emerged victorious in dramatic fashion, booking his flight just 36 hours before the event and shooting what's believed to be the highest-rated round in New Zealand disc golf history. Scott finished six shots clear of joint runners-up Ezra Robinson and Braeden Sides.
In the women's division, Emily Weatherman claimed the title with a commanding performance, ahead of Canada's Sofia Donnecke and former NCAA track athlete Taylor Choceck.
"These players that came are some of the most amazing players on earth," said Ken Harris, Taupō Disc Golf Club President. "We're getting great exposure around the world through the coverage and social media impact."
The tournament's reach has been amplified through professional coverage by Go Throw Disc Golf, with videos already garnering tens of thousands of views globally. The event, supported by a regional promotions grant, is expected to boost Taupō's profile as both a disc golf and tourism destination..
"People are hungry for it," Harris added. "The word is spreading. We're very fortunate to have been selected to be part of this, and we're trying to take advantage by running the best tournament we can and giving these guys a great experience."
