The great swim of Rauhoto – Te tapatanga o Rauhoto – will be remembered this month in the iconic Lake Taupō Across the Lake Swim.
The 4.2-kilometre open water event commemorates the legendary escape of Rauhoto, who fled across the lake from Jerusalem Bay to Wharewaka with her young son Te Uranga strapped to her back, escaping a pursuing warrior party.
First held in 1963, this year's event takes place on Saturday, February 22nd. Among those training is 65-year-old Tim Marshall, who has returned to his hometown several times over the years to participate in the swim.
Tim told Lake FM the early morning conditions make for a memorable experience. "The lake was beautiful; it was warm and just absolutely silky. So you're swimming towards the sun, and as you lift your arm out of the water, there's these golden droplets of water from the rising sun. It is quite magical; it's lovely."
Organised by Lake Taupō Rotary, proceeds from the event support community initiatives and Rotary projects.
The early morning start ensures optimal conditions for swimmers, with the lake typically at its calmest and warmest for this late summer event.
