Further speed consultation for SH1 Tūrangi

Residents of Tūrangi have until mid-May to make the case for the SH1 speed limit through the town to remain at 60km/h and not revert to 80km/h.

An auto-reversal of the State Highway 1 speed limit through Tūrangi from 60km/h to 80km/h has been put on hold until further public consultation between April 2 and May 14.

Further speed consultation by the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) started this week (April 2) for a 2km stretch of State Highway 1 that runs through Tūrangi.

The section is from south of Waiotaka Road to south of Te Arahori Street, Tūrangi.

It had been proposed the current speed limit on this section of SH1 would increase from 60km/h to 80km/h in a reversal of a previous reduction, but the section has been caught up in a formal speed review following community feedback and more public consultation is now being sought.

The consultation runs until May 14.

Once it is completed, NZTA will analyse the feedback, alongside technical data and cost-benefit analyses, before decisions are made on the final speed limits for this section of road and about a dozen others around the country.

NZTA says its recent consultation on other parts of the road network has now closed, and the results should be available by May, or earlier. When these were available it would be responding to all submitters with the outcome as well as releasing the results publicly.
