A falcon found itself in an unusual situation today, taking an unexpected backseat ride in a Police patrol car after being struck by a vehicle in rural Waikato.

The dramatic rescue unfolded when officers from Waikato Highway Patrol spotted the bird struggling in a river after the collision. Acting quickly, they retrieved the injured falcon and ensured it was transported safely to Hamilton Zoo for care.

While the falcon is unable to fly at present, it is now receiving expert attention from the zoo's staff, who are hopeful for its recovery.

Senior Constable Chris Polglase of Waikato Highway Patrol reflected on the incident with a touch of humor. "Policing is about protecting and serving the community, including those overhead," he said.

He added some sage advice for birds and drivers alike: "We are hoping the falcon will make a full recovery and take this as a learning opportunity - if you’re tired, take a break, preferably away from the road."

This act of kindness reminds us that the Waikato Police are always ready to assist, whether on land or in the skies.

Hamilton Zoo staff will monitor the falcon's progress and provide updates on its condition.
