The Crusaders have been crowned champions of the 2025 Super Rugby Under 20s tournament after defeating the Chiefs 41-36 in a nail-biting final that went to extra time at Owen Delany Park in Taupō.

After finishing level at 36-all at full-time, the match went to a golden point period, with the Crusaders scoring the decisive points in the additional 10 minutes to claim victory.

The Chiefs kept in touch throughout the contest but were unable to get ahead, repeatedly drawing level before the Crusaders ultimately prevailed.

Taupō District Council Mayor David Trewavas expressed his delight at hosting the prestigious youth tournament for the 12th consecutive year, highlighting the economic benefits for the region.

"It's eight teams, 10 nights of accommodation and four feeds a day," Trewavas told Lake FM. "It's a good sale, and we don't take it lightly, so we really appreciate the business, and so does the town and district."

The Mayor also acknowledged the importance of the recent lighting upgrades at Owen Delany Park, funded by the New Zealand Government, which have enhanced the venue's capabilities.

"We're so pleased we invested in the lights, which is wonderful," Trewavas said. "It means a multi-sport facility, and we're open to any codes now."

New Zealand Rugby President Matthew Cooper emphasised the tournament's significance in developing future All Blacks.

"This is where our next All Blacks are, and there'll be some special players here who will go on to wear the famous black jersey," Cooper told Lake FM.

Cooper also shared his personal connection to the venue's namesake, saying, "I personally had a great affiliation with Owen Delany in the early years and he was a very special friend and a dear friend. And so I'm so thrilled the legacy of Owen Delany is alive and well here and in the tournament."

The week-long tournament featured eight teams including the Blues, Waikato University Chiefs U20s, Hurricanes, Crusaders, Highlanders, Fiji, and Moana Pasifika Under 20 sides, along with the New Zealand Barbarians Under 21 team, bringing over 200 young players to Taupō.

All matches were broadcast live on Sky Sport, with the newly installed lighting at Owen Delany Park enhancing the viewing experience for both spectators and television audiences.
