Duck shooting tips for season start

Planning and preparation can make for a safe start to the first weekend in May - for humans at least.

With the opening of the duck shooting season this weekend, the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council is advising a little bit of planning can make for a safe and successful start to the season.

Everyone in the maimai should know where things are located (including first aid kit, food and water), who will sit where and all the access points.

Checking kit and some test firing of guns is also important before embarking.

That first weekend can begin with an early start, so a good rest beforehand can make sure everyone gets the most out of the weekend. Leave the celebratory drink until afterwards.

Fish and Game’s top tips for a well-organised maimai include using a rack or stand so guns are in a safe place and always pointing in a safe direction.

The organisation also recommends laying netting or some other non-slip material on slippery surfaces as well as plastic boxes with clip on lids to store gear and ammunition at the rear of the maimai.

The rear of the maimai is also a good place to set up some clip chains if you have dogs that like to move around. This will keep them in a dry, warm spot to rest until it’s time to retrieve game.

The New Zealand hunting season start is always the first weekend of May, and hunters must carry their licence with them and present it if requested by a Fish and Game ranger.
