Kids Greening Taupō staged another successful if slightly drizzly Greening Taupō Day yesterday (June 4).
By around noon Rachel Thompson, Kids Greening Taupō lead education coordinator could laugh that the weather was not following the forecast – with rain only due at 3pm.
“It’s amazing, we’re one of the few outdoor, big events like this where people come, rain, hail or shine.”
And hundreds of school children and adult helpers did turn up to get 4,000 natives planted on ground previously prepared.
The latest planting would all be “adding to the native forest that we're planting linking up Mount Tauhara and town,” said Thompson.
This year’s planting added to areas planted over the last few years on land adjacent to the Taupō Golf Course.
A diverse range of organisations and individuals were present such as Fire and Emergency New Zealand, water safety, Project Tongariro, Department of Conservation, Waikato Regional Council, Taupō District Council, Contact Energy, Tongariro National Trout Centre, Donovan Bixley, Mitre 10.
“You could go on and on.”
Sausages and soup were on offer to keep the young helpers energised.
The day is the biggest event of the year for Greening Taupō – having begun as a fundraiser and Arbor Day planning event before morphing into a festival of environmental education.
