Do you or your children spend too much time on devices?
Creative Taupō is looking to run a Digital Detox Day across the district to present alternatives to spending time on devices and encourage families to participate in new experiences.
The community building exercise will encourage adults and children to try something new during 24 hours in the first weekend of the September/October School holidays (September 26-27).
Creative Taupō is hoping clubs, organisations and community groups will take the opportunity to run events from as short as half an hour for up to four hours, hopefully free or low cost.
The group is working alongside the Taupō District Council, Bike Taupō, Greening Taupō, Waiora House and Sport Waikato (the group’s fellow strategic partners) to create activities that encourage people being off devices.
Creative Taupō chair Toni Sullivan believes the day will be a wonderful opportunity for groups to get involved in promoting themselves, showing potential new members what they have to offer, and collaborating with local businesses such as cafés and venues to create a memorable experience for the community (hāpori).
She says the group is now taking expressions of interest from groups who could be interested in creating an event to list.
“Digital Detox Day is about getting individuals connected, families enjoying time together, meeting new people, conversation, learning, laughing and enjoying the great place that we call home,” she says.
“We envisage creating a timetable/schedule with events and activities happening concurrently, so people can choose what they would like to do. The idea is that this will be out well in advance of the day, with physical copies available from businesses in town and the Taupō i-Site (or Visitor Centre) as well as locations in Tūrangi and Mangakino.”
Groups or individuals who would like to be involved by creating an activity or helping with one should contact [email protected] before Saturday, August 15.
