The northern section of the Desert Road reopened to traffic on Friday, providing welcome relief for motorists travelling between Tūrangi and Rangipō. The reopening allows light vehicles to access State Highway 1 up to the SH1/SH46 intersection, with connection available to SH47 via SH46.
The newly rebuilt section is currently operating under traffic management conditions, including temporary speed restrictions. Road authorities have emphasised the importance of adhering to posted speed limits to prevent vehicle damage and ensure public safety while the new chip seal beds in.
Heavy vehicles must continue to follow the official detour route via State Highways 41, 47, 4, and 49, reconnecting with SH1 at Waiouru. This detour adds approximately 30 to 40 minutes to journey times.
The early reopening marks significant progress in the road's restoration, with the remaining maintenance work on track for completion by mid-March. Further improvements are planned, including the scheduled opening of the Mangatoetoenui Bridge on February 28 for first responders and oversized loads.
Motorists are reminded to drive according to conditions and observe all temporary speed limits while final road marking work is completed.
