Coastguard Taupō is offering local boating enthusiasts a unique opportunity to enhance their maritime skills through an in-person Day Skipper course this weekend. Unlike online alternatives, this classroom-based session provides direct access to qualified instructors.
Unit President Mike Hughes emphasises the comprehensive nature of the course. "It's pretty special to have it in Taupō and you get a face-to-face with an instructor," Hughes told Lake FM. "They give you just some very good down to earth but a little bit more than basic training on all about your boat."
The course covers crucial boating skills including anchoring techniques, navigation lights, right of way rules, and practical manoeuvres such as coming alongside a jetty and trailer backing. Hughes notes that participants will have the opportunity to ask instructors specific questions beyond the course material.
Those interested in participating can register by calling 0800 BOATIE (0800 262833). The course aims to build confidence and competence for both new and experienced boaters, with Hughes noting particularly positive feedback from women participants.
