Award-winning and multi-talented batik artist Ann Hay will open an exhibition of new works this Saturday at the Taupō Museum and coincidentally celebrate her 90th birthday.

Her Lyrical Waxing Continued… exhibition features batik artworks of animals and native birds.

The Taumarunui-based artist who last exhibited in the Taupō Museum five years ago, learnt how to create batik artwork in Africa, where she drew inspiration from animals in the game parks.

Her method involves sponging cold-water dyes onto natural fabrics, one colour at a time which are then left to dry, before being covered in wax. The next colour is then applied. Larger pieces use can take several weeks to complete.

Ann has exhibited in Africa, the UK, New York, Paris, Australia, and throughout New Zealand, and has won numerous art awards. She is also well known for portrait sketches and pastoral scenes working in watercolours and pen and inks and has narrated and illustrated several children's books.

The opening of her exhibition is at Taupō Museum this Saturday from 12pm to 3pm and the exhibition then runs until Monday, March 24 in the Niven Gallery..
