The Huka River Swim has demonstrated its growing popularity, with organiser Adam McDonald confirming during a unique pre-event interview that all 400 spots were claimed within just two hours of release.
Speaking to Lake FM while kayaking the course during a final safety check, McDonald shared multiple viewing opportunities for spectators wanting to catch the action. "You can come to the start line, watch them take off and a few points along the course, drop down to Spa Park Reserve down at the spring there and take a little look at them float past, or down to Hipapatua Reserve for the finish line," he said.
The 3.3-kilometre downstream course is expected to see the fastest swimmers complete it in approximately 25 minutes, with the event kicking off at 10 am tomorrow. While wetsuits aren't mandatory, they are recommended, given the current water temperature.
Local businesses have thrown their support behind the event, with spot prizes provided by several Taupō operators, including Taupō Bungy and FourB Bike Hire. "We really really appreciate their support," McDonald noted while navigating his kayak near Cherry Island during the course inspection.
The event will conclude with prize-giving at Hipapatua Reserve after all swimmers complete the course, which is expected to be around midday. Spectators are encouraged to move between viewing points throughout the morning to catch different stages of the swim.
